Portrait_071009_JohnGaby1Portrait_071009_JohnBBefore I arrived at John and Gaby’s home,  I drew nine small ovals on a sheet of Ingres Fabriano. Gaby selected a Mexican dress, one that she said she wears to parties to inspire conversation about Mexico, her home. The distinct tonal range — dark hair, medium dark scarf, medium complexion, and light dress – is rich visual material. As an artist, Gaby understands what it means to ‘hold a pose.’

I applied a workable Conte ground within each oval, however, the small ovals proved restrictive for the type of study that I was inclined to make. These studies were influenced by a self-portrait that I’d made a few days earlier (below).

I made John’s third drawing (at left) on a separate sheet of Ingres Fabriano, using pencil only. He worked hard at being an excellent model, aided by his natural athleticism.
